You don’t have to wait for Cinco de Mayo to try some of these delicious margarita recipes! I’m always a fan of trying something new, and our Rum Margarita with Captain Morgan is one of my new favorites.

Although we love all margaritas, we love upgrading the classic margarita recipe traditionally made with a margarita mix. By spending a little more time gathering fresh fruit and other quality ingredients, you’ll have the perfect combination for the best rum margarita. Your taste buds will thank you later.

This tropical rum margarita will take you straight to the islands. Mouthwatering papaya, sweet cantaloupe, and a splash of Captain Morgan make the perfect boat drink.

While traditional tequila and triple sec are a mainstay of a house margarita, it’s fun to incorporate a different type of alcohol to your cocktails to experiment with the taste. Rum is definitely the original tropical alcohol, and this rum margarita with Captain Morgan can trick you into thinking you’re relaxing on an island somewhere.

Mouthwatering papaya, sweet cantaloupe, and a splash of Captain Morgan make the perfect summer drink. The good news is that this margarita earns a five-star rating from all of my guests who have enjoyed it.

This delicious drink is perfection in a glass. It’s superior to the traditional margarita. It’s not too sweet, and *maybe* just a tad strong. ;)

Where’s the Recipe?

Here at My Crazy Good Life we write our recipes so that anyone can follow them. We love it when our readers feel confident, and empowered in the kitchen. We make it a priority to help all of our readers, and if you are looking for more detailed instructions you are in the right place. The post below has detailed instructions, recipe tips, and nutritional information.

If you’d like to skip past the ingredient details, recipe tips, and nutritional information, simply scroll down to the bottom where you’ll find the easy to print Rum Margarita recipe.

Ingredients in Rum Margarita with Captain Morgan

  • Lime: Fresh lime juice is a must.
  • Agave Nectar: Not the same as agave syrup. This nectar refers to the natural sugar in the plant, and it tastes delicious. We use agave nectar instead of the traditional simple syrup found in many cocktails. You’ll use a small amount of nectar here to help sweeten the margarita.
  • Captain Morgan Cannon Blast: This dark rum offers a more complex flavor than the Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. Cannon blast rum offers a little bit of sweet and a tiny bit of heat. Feel free to modify the type of rum or use Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum if you are looking for a rum without hints of spice.
  • Margarita Jose Cuervo: Who doesn’t love a good splash of Jose Cuervo?
  • Papaya: Papayas have high levels of antioxidants.
  • Cantaloupe: Cantaloupe is a good choice of fruits for a margarita, it is very hydrating and adds a nice fruity flavor to your drink.
  • Ice Cubes: You’ll want to have several cups of ice on hand depending on how many margaritas you plan on serving.

How to make Rum Margarita with Captain Morgan

  1. In a cocktail shaker add lime juice, agave nectar, rum, Jose Cuervo Margarita and lots of ice.
  2. Secure lid on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
  3. Strain into a tall glass filled with crushed or cubed ice.
  4. Garnish with papaya and cantaloupe slices.
  5. Serve.
  6. Drink responsibly, and never drink and drive.
This tropical rum margarita will take you straight to the islands. Mouthwatering papaya, sweet cantaloupe, and a splash of Captain Morgan make the perfect boat drink.

Recipe Tips

  • If you prefer a little bit of salt on your margaritas, lightly salt the rim of the glass.
  • If you aren’t a huge fan of cantaloupe or papaya, feel free to swap out the fruit with an orange slice or pineapple wedge. This will give you a more citrusy flavor than using papaya and cantaloupe.

What’s better than a popsicle on a hot summer day? Now that we’re adults, Vodka Popsicles with Lemonade are the most refreshing thing on the block!

It doesn’t have to be summer to enjoy these alcoholic popsicles. I keep them in the freezer for an impromptu night by the fire pit or a fun cocktail hour treat.

collage with lemonade popsicles and lemon, with text for social media

    Where’s the recipe?

If you’re looking for a detailed how-to, read the post below before heading to the recipe. I go through all the details you need to make these freezer pops. If you’d like to skip straight to the recipe for Vodka Popsicles with Lemonade, scroll down to the printable recipe!

Ingredients in Vodka Popsicles with Lemonade

    • Vodka: Very much a personal preference. I prefer Ketel One and Tito’s, but everyone has their favorite.
    • Lemonade: You can use any lemonade you prefer. I like Simply Lemonade that you can find in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, but these vodka popsicles work with whatever your favorite lemonade is.
three vodka popsicles stacked on top of one another

How to make vodka popsicles with lemonade

This recipe takes about 10 minutes to prepare, but needs to stored in the freezer for up to 12 hours before eating.

    1. Mix vodka and lemonade in a large bowl or pitcher.
    2. Using a kitchen funnel, pour just over ½ cup of vodka and lemonade mixture into a pouch, leaving about an inch from the top. Seal the pouch and repeat until all of your mixture is gone. Note: This measurement is for the popsicle bags. If you’re using another mold, just make sure to leave a bit for expansion.
    3. Freeze your popsicle pouches in the freezer, lying flat. Leave them at least overnight to freeze.
popsicles and lemon slices on a gray slate

    Recipe Tips

    • Alcohol will not freeze solid. These pops are more like a slush. Pro tip: If your alcohol freezes solid, and you have teenagers in the house… be suspicious that it’s been filled with water. ;)
    • Be sure and leave about an inch from the top of the pouch or popsicle mold to allow for expansion.
    • I love these disposable popsicle molds, but any popsicle mold or popsicle sticks will work.
    • A kitchen funnel is helpful to get the liquid into the molds.
    • It’s fun to experiment with flavored vodkas to create new flavors!
    • You can easily use pink lemonade for these popsicles instead of yellow.
    • Adding diced fresh strawberries or raspberry puree is a great twist on this recipe.
    • You don’t have to use vodka for these–any clear spirit will work.
    • I’ve made this with several types of the Simply juice. I loved the Cherry Limeade!
    • If you’ve got lemons but no lemonade, you can easily make some with fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and water. I love adding fresh lemon zest too.

    Healthy Eating Plans

While vodka popsicles aren’t healthy, this is a better option than store bought alcohol treats. These are about 100 calories each and use just two ingredients. I’ve figured out how to count them on a few popular diet plans:

    • Ultimate Portion Fix/21 Day Fix: One pouch counts as a yellow treat swap for the 21 Day Fix.
    • Weight Watchers: Each serving when using Crystal Light Lemonade is 2 Blue Plan Points | 2 Green Plan Points | 2 Purple Plan Points
    • The 2023 Points are 3, when using Diet Lemonade.

This Skinny Cranberry Margarita recipe is the perfect balance between healthy and indulgent. No added sugar or artificial sweeteners, no syrups, but full of flavor and natural sweetness with about 100 calories.

This recipe is light and bubbly and just as good without the tequila. It’s a perfect low calorie holiday cocktail, but I make these any time of year–not just during the holiday season.

    collage image for cranberry margaritas

I’m always looking for low calorie tequila drinks, since I don’t care to drink anything super sweet or heavy. Even with a couple of candied cranberries, these margaritas aren’t too sweet–they make the best low calorie Christmas cocktail.

This recipe is considered healthy because it has just a few simple ingredients–sparkling water (you could also use club soda, but I haven’t seen flavored club sodas so I stick with the water), fresh limes, tequila (or vodka!), and cranberry juice.

I didn’t add orange juice, sugar, or other liqueur options because to be honest this recipe doesn’t need them. This is a delicious sugar free, artificial sweetener free cranberry cocktail. Whether you’re looking for a skinny poolside cocktail or a low calorie holiday drink, this recipe is simple and refreshing!

    Ingredients

    • Sparkling water: Plain sparkling water like Perrier is great, but I really enjoy the extra flavor of flavored sparkling water. Just be sure whatever you choose doesn’t have any sugars or artificial sweeteners.
    • Tequila: Be sure and use a good quality tequila. Lower quality tequilas often have extra ingredients that you probably don’t want to be drinking (man, I could write an entire post on that!). Cazadores, Don Julio, and Herradura are great options that you can find in your local grocery store. For this recipe, I prefer silver tequila.
    • Cranberry juice: Look for 100% juice. A lot of bottled cranberry juice contains sugar so be sure and read your label.
    • Fresh Lime juice From freshly squeezed limes, of course ;)
two cranberry margaritas top down view

    Quick Instructions

    1. If you’d like to drink this cocktail over ice, add ice, tequila, lime juice, and cranberry juice to your glass. Fill to the top with sparkling water and enjoy!
    2. If you’d rather shake this cocktail, add ice to a glass and the following ingredients to a cocktail shaker: tequila, lime juice, and cranberry juice. Shake for 15 seconds, then pour over ice. Top with chilled sparkling water.

    Recipe Tips

    • For a little added sweetness, rim the glass with lime juice and coat with raw sugar. I don’t often do this, but every once in a while it’s fun to. If you are serving these to someone who prefers sweet, go ahead and add a splash of simple syrup.
    • For a festive presentation, add 3 whole cranberries to a toothpick for a garnish. If you want to make sugared cranberries like I did for these pictures you can, but know that this will bump it out of the 100 calorie range.
    • This recipe is great over ice or shaken and poured.
    • Not feeling the alcohol? Skip the tequila and enjoy the delicious mocktail version.
    • Not loving the Sparkling Cranberry Margarita? You can use still water instead of sparkling!
    • This is a perfect cocktail to serve alongside your Thanksgiving dinner.

    Healthy Eating Plans

If you’re on a healthy eating plan, this should fit right into it. As a 21 Day Fix margarita it fits perfectly as a treat swap (any alcohol is a treat swap). As a Weight Watchers margarita, it’s a low point cocktail–just 4 points on all plans.

If this cocktail doesn’t fit into your healthy eating plan, the mocktail version of this recipe might work better for you–simply leave the alcohol out of the recipe and enjoy!

    More skinny cocktail recipes

One of my favorite things to do is take naturally flavored sparkling water and make different cocktails with it. I have several made for you to spark your creativity on how you can use the same sparking water to make lower calorie versions of your favorite cocktails–these are all right around 100 calories.

      Ingredients in Pumpkin Milkshake

      • Honey: This natural sweetener is a perfect treat. The honey helps the sprinkles stick to the rim of the glass making each sip a little bit sweeter and fun.
      • Sprinkles: Sprinkles make everything seem like a party, am I right? They definitely make our pumpkin pie milkshake even more festive.
      • Vanilla ice cream: We love ice cream. Vanilla ice cream gives this milkshake a dreamy flavor. If you are looking to lighten the recipe, you could opt to use frozen yogurt instead. Just note that the result might not be as creamy as the original recipe.
      • Milk: We used whole milk for our pumpkin milkshake, however both 1% and skim milk should work just fine, too.
      • Cream: The cream in this recipe really helps pull it all together into a smooth and super delicious drink. We used half-and-half, but heavy whipping cream should be great.
      • Pure vanilla extract: A classic ingredient of all things delicious.
      • Canned pumpkin purée: Pumpkin purée is the MVP of all pumpkin pie filling. The delicious and earthy flavors of pumpkin, mixed with all the fall spices. Yum! We used Libby’s canned pumpkin puree for this recipe, however if you are feeling adventurous, you could make your own pumpkin puree at home using fresh pumpkins.
      • Pumpkin pie spice: Pumpkin pie spice is so delicious, it’s an already mixed up blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. These flavors take me back to the times of eating pumpkin pie at my Grandma’s house. You should be able to find pumpkin pie spice in the grocery store, however it is simple to make on your own if you can’t find it easily.
      • Cinnamon: The taste of cinnamon reminds me of so many good times baking in the kitchen with my family. It has a comforting aroma and is a perfect addition to this recipe.
      • Graham cracker crumbs: Traditional pumpkin pie has a pie crust, this recipe incorporates graham cracker crumbs to help give it a sweetened flavor and delightful texture.
      • Bourbon: Any type of bourbon works great for this recipe, for a more bold bourbon flavor, you could add spiced bourbon to the recipe.
      • Whipped Cream: Whipped cream is an optional garnish to the top of your pumpkin milkshake. We’ve tasted it both ways, and both ways are pie-mazing!

How to Make Pumpkin Milkshake in the Blender

      1. Apply honey or frosting to the rim of each glass. Dip the rims into a bowl of sprinkles and twist back and forth to ensure even coverage. Set aside.
      2. Add all of the milkshake ingredients into a blender and mix until well blended.
      3. Carefully pour the milkshake into each glass. Serve immediately and enjoy our pumpkin shake.
      4. Optional: Sprinkle cinnamon and/or whipped cream on top of pumpkin pie milkshake.
dark background with pumpkin milkshake in a glass mason jar. Shake has whipped cream and cinnamon decoration on top.

      Recipe Tips

      • If you aren’t wanting to use sprinkles as a garnish for your glass, you could also dip the rim of the glass into crumbled graham crackers. Graham cracker crumbs on the rim of the pumpkin milkshake is delicious.
      • We purchase plain pumpkin puree, not the kind that already has the pumpkin pie spice mixed in. We like to be able to add the amount of pumpkin pie spice to our pumpkin puree.
      • This pumpkin milkshake recipe uses dairy, if you are looking for a vegan-friendly shake, you could simply swap out the dairy ingredients for vegan-friendly options. Instead of ice cream you could use a non dairy ice cream, opt for coconut cream instead of half-and-half, and use a non dairy milk such as almond milk or coconut milk. Please note that we haven’t recipe tested this version, but it sounds delicious!
      • We don’t think you’ll have any leftovers from this recipe, but if you do, store your pumpkin milkshake in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer. Our boozy pumpkin milkshake is better to finish it up immediately after blending.

Nothing says summer like popsicles, right? And nothing says an adult summer like wine popsicles! Like white? I’ve got a delicious and not too sweet recipe for white wine popsicles with strawberries. More of a red person? I’ve got a perfectly sweet red wine popsicle recipe here too–and you can make them yourself for a fraction of the cost that it would take to buy them!

image with text of red wine and white wine popsicles

        Wait–does wine freeze?

It totally does! Wine actually has a lower alcohol content than most hard liquors, and they freeze too! The trick is to get your ratios right, and I’ve done the work for you here. These wine popsicles froze solid overnight (they took about 12 hours to freeze completely) and were delicious the next day! If you were to freeze just a few of these, they’d freeze faster–I made about 24, so that’s why they took a little longer.

What do I need to make wine popsicles?

For the red wine popsicles, you’ll need:

        • wine
        • honey
        • a fresh lime
        • sparkling water (I used lime, but you could use any flavor)

For the white wine popsicles, you’ll need:

        • wine
        • honey
        • strawberries
        • sparkling water

You’re also going to need something to freeze your popsicles in, whether it’s a popsicle mold, zip bags like I used, or another popsicle maker. Don’t forget the popsicle sticks if you’re using molds!

These boozy popsicles take about 15 minutes to make (but then they’ll need to freeze).

How to make red wine popsicles:

        1. Each of the zip bags I used for my popsicles holds one half cup + one ounce of liquid. I made four of these popsicles at a time.
        2. Pour wine  and 1/2 cup sparkling water into a bowl.
        3. In a small measuring cup or bowl add honey, lime juice, and the rest of the sparkling water. Pour at once into a small saucepan over medium heat to make simple syrup.
        4. Add the simple syrup to the wine mixture and stir well.
        5. Pour into popsicle molds or bags, leaving room for expansion. If you’d rather the pops not expand as much, use filtered water instead of sparkling water.
        6. Freeze 8-10 hours, but preferably overnight.

How to make white wine popsicles:

        1. Each of the zip bags I used for my popsicles holds one half cup + one ounce of liquid. I made four of these popsicles at a time.
        2. Pour wine and 1/2 cup sparkling water into a bowl.
        3. In a small measuring cup or bowl add honey, muddled or crushed strawberries, and the remaining sparkling water. See the recipe notes below for directions about muddling fruit. Pour these ingredients at once into a small saucepan over medium heat to make simple syrup.
        4.  Add the simple syrup to the wine mixture and stir well.
        5. Pour the mixture into popsicle bags or molds. Make sure to leave room for expansion. You can also use still water in place of the sparkling water–it’ll help the pops to not expand as much when freezing.
        6. Freeze a minimum of 8-10 hours, or until frozen.

How do you crush or muddle fruit?

Muddling fruit is simply infusing it into a drink. But this about strawberries, for example, which is what this wine popsicle recipe calls for–would you taste strawberries more when they’re chopped and placed into a popsicle or when they’re crushed and added? Definitely crushed and added. There are a few ways you can muddle fruit.

        1. Use a fork and crush the fruit under the fork tines. This is the most difficult way, but it works in a pinch! You can make this a little easier by heating over medium heat in a saucepan to help it break down.
how to muddle fruit for cocktails

        2. Use a citrus squeezer. This works better than the fork, for sure! Place the fruit in small batched into the lime squeezer. Use a bigger bowl to catch the fruit, because it’s a little messy. It’s awesome because it gives you a lot of juice.

how to muddle fruit with a lime squeezer

        3. Use a mortar and pestel. This is what I usually use, as it gets a ton of juice from the fruit and pulverizes it in the process. It gives the best flavor, I think.

how to muddle fruit with a mortar and pestel

You could also use a small food processor or blender to muddle fruit if you have enough to reach the blades. Lots of options here!

These wine popsicles are a delicious grown up summer treat! Be sure to keep them out of reach of young ones, of course, and enjoy!

I thought I’d share this delicious Strawberry Bubble Tea Margarita because… well… margaritas with tequila-infused bubbles can’t be bad, right? In fact, they are delicious.

Bubble tea is popping up everywhere around the United States, and now there are bubble tea cocktails too! The “bubble” part refers to the small balls of tapioca that are at the bottom of these fun drinks.

images and text of Boba Margarita for pinterest

If you are ready to get started with the recipe, simply scroll to the bottom of the page where you’ll find our easy to print Boba Margarita recipe.

        Ingredients in Boba Margaritas

        • Tapioca Pearls: Tapioca is a starch extracted from the cassava plant. These little flour pearls are enclosed in a sugary syrup. These tapioca pearls turn this margarita into a bubble tea and also sweeten the margarita.
        • Tequila – 1800 Tequila Silver: You’ll use the part of the tequila to soak the tapioca pearls that’ll be at the base of this delicious boba margarita. The remaining portion of the tequila in the recipe will go into the blender to help give the margarita a little boozy boost.
        • Green Tea: Bonus! The green tea gives a little caffeine in the Boba margarita.
        • Water: You’ll use the water to make the batch of green tea.
        • Strawberries: Who doesn’t love the fresh strawberry flavor? We love the complex flavors of strawberry mixed with tea and tequila.
        • Margarita Mix Strawberry: Any margarita mix with strawberry is perfect. We tend to choose our margarita mix based on the nutrition calories and sugar content.
        • Guava Nectar: Guava nectar is made from the pulp of the guava fruit. It’s more readily available than guava juice.
        • Lime: Is it even a margarita if it doesn’t have a little squeeze of lime juice and garnished with a lime wedge?
        • Heavy Cream: (or Sweetened Condensed Milk)
        • Ice Cubes: Keeping it chilled is important, when blending the ice cubes with the remaining ingredients this’ll help.
        • Sea salt: For rimming the margarita glass.

        2. Prepare two (2) tea bags in 1/2 cup of hot water, allow tea to steep for 5 – 10 minutes, discard tea bags, place the green tea in the refrigerator to chill until ready to use.
        3. In a blender add strawberries, tequila, margarita mix, guava nectar, lime juice, heavy cream, tea, and ice cubes. Place top on blender and pulse until smooth.
        4. Spoon tequila-soaked tapioca pearls into the bottom third of a martini glass rimmed with coarse sea salt.
        5. Pour Margarita mixture over the tapioca pearls.
        6. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
        7. Serve immediately and drink responsibly.

        Recipe Tips

        • This recipe includes green tea, which naturally contains small levels of caffeine. If you are looking for a decaffeinated version of this, there are many decaffeinated green teas available at grocery stores or online.
        • If you are looking for an alcohol free version, you could try using spirit-free (non-alcoholic) tequila in this recipe. Sometimes you are looking for a delicious bubbly drink that doesn’t contain alcohol.

Here in Arizona it gets hot…that’s no secret…the secret is how I deal with the heat: with margaritas of course! This rosé margarita is blended with plenty of ice so it’s cool, refreshing, and has the kick we’re all looking for in a margarita. It’s the perfect drink to celebrate National Rosé Day or any other day for that matter!

        National Rosé Day

National Rosé Day is June 9th. It was first introduced as a National Holiday in 2014 and it has been going strong ever since. It’s gathered quite the fun following in recent years and I thought it deserved to have a margarita all its own!

Rosé wine is make with red grapes despite it’s clear coloring. Rosé is what some consider to be the oldest type of wine with some varieties dating back as far as 600 BC…so I mean you can totally consider this drink recipe as historical research if you want :)

There are rosé wines that are semi-sparkling or sparkling with differences in sweetness and dryness so you can choose your favorite or let someone give you a great recommendation. My recipe doesn’t call for any one particular brand or type. If you prefer something a little more sparkling just make sure you get a more bubbly variety!

The best thing about this rosé margarita is that it compliments all of our favorite summer dishes so well. Rosé is very versatile and goes well with lots of different flavors and foods!
