If you’re looking for an updated 21 Day Fix Food List to print and hang on the fridge, I’ve got one for you! There are two versions of the list – a one page list for handy access on the go and a two page list with some extra info like flours and milks and a larger font.

Beachbody has updated their food list over the years, and the 21 Day Fix has slowly evolved into the nutrition program called Portion Fix. Beachbody has spoken unofficially on social media about foods not on the list, and I’ve pulled together all of that information for you along with the official food list and created a handy food list that you can reference.

Why does your food list look different? 

When I’m in my kitchen cooking, or answering questions from readers, I like to be able to easily reference the Ultimate Portion Fix book. I don’t carry the book with me though, so it’s always helpful to have this Printable Updated 21 Day Fix Food List with me. I have a screenshot of it on my phone so I can reference it while I’m out, as well as one that I have printed and hung on my fridge. 

I’m not a Beachbody coach or salesperson, I’m just like you – someone on a lifelong journey to a healthy lifestyle. I have taken courses and earned my Precision Nutrition Certificate, so much of the information I share is from a nutrition background as well.

What is included on the 21 Day Fix Updated Food List?

The ONE page color coded food list contains the approved items from each of the food groups / color-coded containers:

(as a bonus, each link below leads to a list of recipes that counts as at least one full container of each color – this is so helpful when meal planning!)

  • Green Container: 1 cup, veggies like lettuce, broccoli, collard greens, and asparagus.
  • Blue Container: 1/3 cup, healthy fats like cheese, avocado, and coconut milk
  • Orange Container:  2 tablespoons, like pumpkin seeds and dressings
  • Purple Container: 1 cup, fruits such as apples, bananas, and berries. 
  • Red Container: 3/4 cup, protein like protein powder, tofu, cottage cheese, whole eggs and egg whites, and greek yogurt. The vegan list has vegan foods such as veggie burger, beans, and tempeh. 
  • Yellow Container: 1/2 cup, whole grain english muffins, peas and carrots, and sweet potatoes.
  • Free food list (yup, there are free foods on the list!)
  • Teaspoons: a literal teaspoon, mayo, nut butter, and extra-virgin olive oil
  • Treat swaps: Your “junk food” is a treat swap.
  • Coffee bar options
  • Water options
  • Each list also contains a page of shopping tips, FIX tips, and life tips for the most successful round. These are things you might need explained to you, like how tomato sauce counts as a green if there is no sugar added, but a purple if the ingredient list contains sugar.

The TWO page color coded food list includes all of the above plus:

  • It contains larger print
  • Flour options and their containers
  • Milk options and their containers

I’ve also added information that every FIXer should know, including container sizes and nutrition information for each container. This 21 Day Fix container guide helps you make educated decisions when you’re choosing what to eat.

For example, knowing that the yellow container averages 45-140 calories, you can assume that one 120 calorie serving of whole grain bread is a yellow. This helps you when picking out foods at the grocery store!

What’s the difference between the 21 Day Fix and Ultimate Portion Fix?

The 21 Day Fix program has undergone many changes over the years. In 2019, Beachbody decided to call it the Ultimate Portion Fix, and currently it’s known as Portion Fix.

Is the 21 Day Fix Food List in a certain order?

Yes! I know a lot of people are frustrated that the list isn’t in alphabetical order, but there is a reason for this. 

While all of these foods are healthy and promote weight loss, the most nutritious ones are at the top of each container list. If you’re looking for the best way to buckle down past a plateau and continue losing weight, for example, I’d choose sweet potatoes over brown rice, or chicken breast over beef.

-Meal prep is not necessary for the Fix, but meal planning is. Think of it like a budget–instead of money, you’re budgeting your food to get the most success on the diet.

What is the 21 Day Fix?

The 21 Day Fix is a nutrition program from Beachbody. It takes the guesswork out of macro eating by labeling each food category (macro) with a colored container.

How do I use a 21 Day Fix Printable Meal Planner\Meal Tracker?

I like to add my dinners into the planner first, since they’re so difficult to plan (with a family). Then I fill in lunches, breakfasts, and snacks. I cross off each container as I plan for it so I know that I’ve gotten them all in and not gone over for the day. 

When should I take my 21 Day Fix measurements?

Definitely take measurements before starting any Beachbody program, including the 21 Day Fix. Take pictures, too! So many people avoid this because they don’t want to be upset about where they’re starting, but it is so important for comparison later.

Comparing measurements and pictures from day one to day 21 is so inspiring–you’re going to be glad you did it! 

How do I use these free 21 Day Fix printables? 

First, bookmark this post so you can come back and print more as you need them! 

I like to print these worksheets at the beginning of every round: 

  • Printable Meal Planner/Tracker
  • Printable Measurement Tracker

 I print and laminate these worksheets: 

The printable meal trackers can be kept in a binder for future reference. If you lost a ton of weight in a certain round and want to replicate that, you could look back at what you ate during that round. 

The measurement trackers can be kept in a binder to refer to later as well. Add the start and end dates, along with what round the measurements were taken. A round is 21 days of the 21 day fix.

The planner stickers are a lifesaver for anyone who uses a paper planner and wants to keep track of their containers throughout the day! Print these on sticker paper and cut them out carefully. These are probably my favorite printable! 

The pocket sized container checklist is great for anyone who can’t carry around a planner, their phone, or a purse all day. I originally made them for one of my readers who was a nurse–she wanted to be able to keep track of her containers while on the go!

If you find yourself asking, “What is 21 Day Fix?” you’ve come to the right place. The 21 Day Fix is a nutrition program and set of workouts from Beachbody that is based on macronutrients–fat, proteins, and carbohydrates.

I’m going to break it down; the 21 Day Fix is an awesome diet and lifestyle program. This program is not as complex as you might think and once you get used to thinking in containers, it becomes a lifestyle.

How to do I start the 21 Day Fix?

It’s pretty easy to get started, the 21 Day Fix plan comes with everything you need to get going! You can order the 21 Day Fix program here, it comes with a food list, colored containers, the 21 Day Fix workout DVDs, the 3-Day Quick Fix book, and the program manual. You will need the program itself to calculate some of the key elements of the plan, like how many of each containers to eat every day. The resources here for recipe ideas, printables, and more will enhance your 21 Day Fix experience but they won’t replace the plan itself.

If you’d rather not buy the program, there are many places online that you can find the information you need. You’ll need to:

  1. Find your calorie goal. You can do that by using this easy 21 Day Fix Bracket Calculator or calculating it yourself here:
    1. If you’re not working out, take your current weight x 11 to find your caloric baseline. Subtract 400 from that to find your calorie target. Also use this formula if you’d like to maintain your weight and not lose.
    2. If you are working out, take your current weight x 11 to find your caloric baseline. Add 400 for your exercise. Then subtract 750 for your calorie deficit.

2. Read below about your containers and what each color represents, as well as the bracket that your calorie goal is in.

3. In the printable library, find the 21 Day Fix food list. It’s a list of foods that you can eat–sorted by container color. The healthiest foods are at the top, and the least healthy at the bottom. Remember, though, everything on the list is healthy–it’s just broken down this way.

What can you eat on 21 Day Fix? | What is 21 Day Fix eating plan?

Basically the 21 Day Fix program works by assigning various food groups to a color coded container. Your height, activity level, weight, and long term goals will define how many of each colored container you will eat each day. By controlling food group types the 21 Day Fix helps you develop habits that are healthy and sustainable. There are so many delicious recipes that are broken down by containers, types of recipes, and more.

If you’re wondering specifically what is 21 day fix approved, I’ve written about that as a way to help people know exactly what to look for when shopping or using products they have on hand already.

There are (quite literally) hundreds of 21 Day Fix recipes on the internet. Unfortunately, some people have started adding “21 Day Fix Approved” on some recipes that are most certainly not 21 Day Fix approved, so make sure that when you see a Fixed recipe, all of the ingredients are on the food list.

What Do the Colored Containers Mean? What is 21 Day Fix container system?

Here is a breakdown of the colors of the containers, and what you put in them. Click each container for a list of recipes that have at least one container of that color–it’s super helpful for planning your day!

  • The Blue container is for Healthy Fats – avocado, nuts, and cheeses. It’s 1/3 cup.
  • The Green container is for Veggies – pretty self-explanatory but there are certain vegetables that are approved so make sure to check the food list! It’s 1 cup.
  • The Yellow container is for healthy Carbs and Starches – sweet potatoes, whole grains, etc. The yellow container is 1/2 cup.
  • The Purple container is for Fruits – whole fruits, not juices because you want the benefit of the fiber and filling nature of the fruit. This container is 1 cup.
  • The Red container is for Protein – lean meats and such. The red container is 3/4 cup.
  • The Orange container is for Seeds and Dressings – healthy oils and seeds–no canola oil, added sugar, or no fat dressings – we want the cleanest ones we can find. It’s 2 tablespoons.

The 21 Day Fix: How many containers per meal?

There are six calorie brackets for the 21 Day Fix/Ultimate Portion Fix:

1,200-1,499 calories, Plan A: Each day, you’ll be eating 4 green containers (veggies), 2 purple containers (fruits), 4 red containers (protein), 2 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 3 teaspoons of oil. (this has been updated as of Spring 2019, when the Ultimate Portion Fix came out)

1,500-1,799 calories, Plan B: Each day, you’ll be eating 4 green containers (veggies), 3 purple containers (fruits), 4 red containers (protein), 3 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 4 teaspoons of oil.

1,800-2,099 calories, Plan C: Each day, you’ll be eating 5 green containers (veggies), 3 purple containers (fruits), 5 red containers (protein), 5 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 5 teaspoons of oil.

2,100-2,300 calories, Plan D: Each day, you’ll be eating 6 green containers (veggies), 4 purple containers (fruits), 6 red containers (protein), 4 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 6 teaspoons of oil.

2,300-2,499 Calories, Plan E: Each day, you’ll be eating 7 green containers (veggies), 5 purple containers (fruits), 6 red containers (protein), 5 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 7 teaspoons of oil.

2,500-2,800 Calories, Plan F: 8 green containers (veggies), 5 purple containers (fruits), 7 red containers (protein), 5 yellow containers (carbs), 1 blue container (healthy fats), 1 orange container (seeds and dressings), and 8 teaspoons of oil.

How to Use the 21 Day Fix Containers

You can always stock up on color coded containers but if you don’t want to, or you can use measuring cups. People don’t necessarily pack their food in the containers, they mainly just measure their foods in them.

Fill your containers (make sure the lid fits!) and then place the ingredients in colored bags (or regular ziplock bags) for easy travel and storage, or meal prep containers. This is especially good advice for meal prep. If you like to have things ready to grab and go you can use these bags to help.

Planning and prepping for the whole week can help keep you on track with healthy snacks. Chances are good that healthy snacks will be easier to choose if they’re handy, and you’ll probably be so used to using the containers after a few weeks that you can eyeball the measurements better if you’re in a pinch or out at a restaurant.

What is NOT allowed on 21 Day Fix? What foods are not allowed?

Of course, after asking “what is the 21 day fix?” you’re going to ask “what the heck can I not have anymore?” Here’s my list.

Sugars and artificial sugars. White flours. Fat free and non fat foods, because they usually contain additives to take out the fat. If it’s in a package, it’s questionable. You should be drinking water, black coffee, and unsweetened tea. If you need a sweetener, 100% Stevia (like SweetLeaf) is best.

The first ingredient in your bread should be Whole Grain Wheat. When you buy foods in a package, they should not contain sugar, highly processed oils, artificial sweeteners, or other ingredients that you can’t pronounce as an ingredient.

A lot of people struggle with giving up coffee creamer on the 21 Day Fix, but once they do they quickly see why it can be detrimental to a diet. Coffee creamers are full of highly processed oils and artificial sweeteners, and starting your mornings off with them can cause sugar cravings, lethargy, and weight gain.

What Else do You Need for the 21 Day Fix?

Another key aspect of the 21 Day Fix plan is water! My favorite way to make sure I get my water each day is by taking along a 20 oz tumbler or Hydro Flask. You’re supposed to drink 1/2 of your body weight in ounces every day on the 21 Day Fix–most people underestimate how much water the body needs to lose weight.

I load it up with ice, fresh fruit, and water. If I can drink 5 or 6 of these tumblers in one day I know that I’ve knocked my water goal out of the ballpark! When I start to get bored with water, I switch to a new tumbler. I can’t lie, I love travel mugs of all kinds.

It’s like a special treat to get a new one, dig out one of my favorites, etc. It inspires me to keep my water with me at times when I have a fun and flashy travel mug or tumbler to carry!

I’ve gathered all of my favorite 21 Day Fix staples in one place for you–the best news is that most of them arrive in 2 days with Amazon Prime!

Do I need Shakeology for 21 Day Fix?

Absolutely not–you don’t need any shakes to successfully do the 21 Day Fix. Some Beachbody “coaches” (I put that in quotes because in the Beachbody world, coach means a salesperson. They do not have any training in exercise science or nutrition) will have you thinking that Shakeology drinks are necessary for the fix, but they’re not at all. Beachbody salespeople are paid a percentage of the sales they make, so when you buy Shakeo from a Beachbody rep, they’re making money.

The 21 Day Fix food list has foods listed in order from healthiest (on the top) to least healthy (on the bottom). Shakeology is not at the top of the food list. Some Shakeology contains cane sugar, which technically isn’t even approved on the Fix–soooooo do what you’d like with that information.

Do I need protein shakes on the 21 Day Fix?

Nope, but if you’re looking for one because you like drinking protein shakes, you can find some 21 Day Fix approved protein shakes and meal replacement shakes here:

What are the 21 Day Fix workouts? What is the 21 Day Fix Workout Schedule?

In order, they are:

Monday: Total Body Cardio Fix (what a way to start the week!)
Tuesday: Upper Fix
Wednesday: Lower Fix or Barre Legs
Thursday: Pilates Fix or Flat Abs Fix
Friday: Cardio Fix
Saturday: Dirty 30
Sunday: Yoga

What if I can’t do the 21 Day Fix workouts in order?

It’s best to try and do them in order, but the bottom line is that if you’re moving, you’re moving! Switch them up according to your schedule or what needs you have–the most important thing is not giving up.

Do I have to do the 21 Day Fix Workouts?

Actually, you don’t. I’m not going to lecture you on the benefits of exercise–because I’m guessing that you know them. About 80% of the weight loss struggle is what you eat–the choices that you make all day long about what to put into your mouth. Exercise isn’t too important for weight loss (but it is very important for health).

If you do choose to workout on the 21 Day Fix, you can do the Fix workout videos, any other home workout videos, fitness classes, gym workouts, Crossfit, walking, running, etc–anything you want. If you’re doing heavy workouts, you might have to add a few extra containers a day, but wait to see how you feel before adding them in.

If you’ve done the 21 Day Fix, you probably know that in addition to the official book, 21 Day Fix Eating Plan, there is a new 21 Day Fix foods list. There are also several updates from Autumn and Beachbody about treat swaps that talk about different foods that are “free” and have been updated, but not published in a 21 Day Fix book yet.

These changes make it SO confusing for those on the 21 Day Fix who want to follow the rules–I get it. It’s frustrating for everyone!

Yellow Container Changes

Are Kodiak Pancakes Approved for the 21 Day Fix?

Beachbody experts have updated the forum to include Kodiak Cakes–1/2 R and 1 1/2Y per serving. In addition, the 21 Day Fix app says that whole grain pancakes (1 4 inch) and waffles are allowed.

Popcorn on the 21 Day Fix

Popcorn is now a yellow container–not a yellow treat swap. Please see link below in treat swap section.

Powdered Peanut Butter on the 21 Day Fix

In October 2017, Beachbody released this article: https://www.beachbodyondemand.com/blog/peanut-butter-nutrition-facts and said that peanut butter powder counts as 1/2 Y on the 21 Day Fix. The way it is stated, it sounds to me like 2 tablespoons is 1/2 Y.

Are pickles on the new 21 Day Fix food list?

Looks like it! Though I haven’t seen Beachbody specifically say that pickles are approved, I’ve heard rumblings of it on food blogs–it seems that even Beachbody is now using them in recipes and counting them as a green! You can see pickles being counted as a green container in this slider recipe as well as in this Beachbody meal prep post.

I knew you’d be excited about this, so the first thing I did when I heard this was make a dill pickle chicken salad/dip recipe for you :)

21 Day Fix Treat Swaps

Beachbody released a long list of Treat and Beverage updates, which includes dried fruits, alcohol, and more. Make sure to save the graphics that I made to your phone for reference!

Three times a week you can swap a treat for a container. Here are the approved treats and alcohol that Autumn and Beachbody approve of:

Yellow Container Treat Swaps:

Dried Cranberries (2 tablespoons, about 30 pieces)
Dark chocolate, plain (1.5″ sq., 1 fun size bar or approximately 25 morsels)
Potato chips, plain kettle, 6 chips, 1Y
Tortilla chips, plain corn, 6 chips, 1Y
Mini pretzels (14 pieces), 1Y

How to Count Flours on the 21 Day Fix

When coming across foods that are approved but not on the food list, it’s nice to have this comprehensive container guide from Stephanie at The Foodie and the Fix. It helps you find the calorie and other nutritional information for each container so you can compare what you’re trying to Fix.

The flours below without a link have not been addressed by Beachbody, so I have made an educated guess on how they would be counted. 

Brown rice flour is 1/4C = 1 yellow

Whole Wheat flour and Gluten Free Flour is counted as 1/4C = 1 yellow

1/4C of oat flour is 1 yellow container

2T of almond Flour is 1 blue container

3T of coconut flour is 1 orange container

Chickpea flour is 1/4C = 1 yellow

Set aside a time of day that works best for you–routines are easy to stick to!

If you are consistent in your routine you’ll find that success is easier to achieve. It makes it easier for your body to cooperate but it will also make it easier for you to do all of your workouts. A routine will make it less likely that you will end up skipping workouts, this will directly impact your overall results so set that time aside that time and get to it!

Have a small snack and drink plenty of water while doing your workouts.

With this Beachbody 21 Day Workout Plan you will notice that it takes a lot of sweat and some serious energy to get through your daily workouts. Plan your eating schedule accordingly so that you will have plenty of energy for your workout. Drinking plenty of water while on the 21 Day Fix and this Beachbody 21 Day Workout Plan is very important. It will keep you hydrated and that proper hydration will keep your muscles in top notch shape for growing, changing, and repairing.

If you’re sore, try to drink some BCAAs and use a foam roller. A bath in epsom salts helps too!

If you’re sore from working out, I’ve written some tips for you right here. Don’t give up because you’re sore–it’s your body saying that what you’re doing is working!

You will need to take so extra time to give yourself the TLC your body needs. When starting any new workout program you need some time to adjust. There will be soreness, there will be pain. BUT it will all be worth it when you start seeing results. You will feel your body using muscles you didn’t even know you had! Use BCAAs, a foam roller, even an epsom salt bath will help ease your aching muscles.

How long is each workout in 21 Day Fix?

Each workout for 21 Day Fix will be roughly 30 minutes. Some of the workouts are more intense than others during those 30 minutes but they are all designed to help you along the way as you build tolerance and stamina. There are modifications to make each move harder or easier depending on your current fitness level…that means that almost ANYONE can do the 21 Day Fix workout calendar without having to skip days or miss entire workouts!

If you are not familiar with the 21 Day Fix, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. Here are some into posts that are packed with great stuff that you’ll need along the way, as well as my honest opinion on the program and it’s methods! 

How do I calculate my 21 Day Fix?

If you are just starting out on the 21 Day Fix you’ll need to use the program materials to calculate your baseline calorie needs. The program takes into consideration the calories you’ll burn doing the daily workouts as well as the calorie deficit that is safe for you to maintain during the program and then it will tell you (with some simple math) which group you are in. Here are some meal plans for each of the groups so you’ll have recipes ready and on hand for your 21 Day Fix journey no matter which bracket you are working with! 

How many calories do you burn in 21 Day Fix?

It will vary from workout to workout because some of them are more focused on cardio (which burns more calories) and others are focused on building muscle and stretching! Here’s a rough guideline of the calories you can expect to burn during these workouts…this info will change based on your current weight and effort level you put in as well! 

  • Dirty 30 | 200 Calories
  • Upper Fix | 196 Calories
  • Lower Fix | 240 Calories 
  • Cardio Fix | 312 Calories

Many  of you already know that 21 Day Fix is my workout and lifestyle plan of choice! I’ve seen great results with it and it’s something that I have really loved taking from a short term workout and weight loss plan and turning into a lifestyle! What’s a 21 Day Fix?

21 Day Fix is a Beachbody program that teaches portion control through specifically designed containers. Each calorie bracket has specific intake goals for the day, along with a whole foods approach the program helps you make small changes that end up impacting your life in big ways. 

Obviously 21 Day Fix also has an exercise component that you can use to help see major results in both weight loss and overall muscle tone. I have some more detailed info on the 21 Day Fix linked below: 

Do I have to purchase the 21 Day Fix Workout DVDs? 

You can purchase the DVDs for 21 Day Fix but you can also just stream the workouts and the program materials from your computer, smartphone, or tablet with the Beachbody On Demand subscription. It’s a great way to have access to not only 21 Day Fix but also all the other great Beachbody content! 

How long is each workout in 21 Day Fix?

21 Day Fix workouts are about 3o minutes. A couple of the workouts are shorter than that and most of them vary in intensity. Each one comes with detailed instructions and a guide on how to modify the workout moves for a less or more intense workout. If you are just starting out or if this is your 100th time through the program there is something that will suit your  needs. That means almost anyone can successfully do the 21 Day Fix program with the exercise component!  

How many calories do you burn in 21 Day Fix?
