Who else loves all things Star Wars? When my boys were younger, we were obsessed with Star Wars. We loved eating these fun BB 8 quesadillas on family movie nights when we would watch the latest Star Wars movie at home.

The droid BB-8, is one of our favorites in this household. He is the perfect combination of the classic Star Wars droid but loaded with so many lovable features.

We love incorporating Star Wars into family fun at home, especially on May 4th. Our Star Wars BB 8 quesadillas originated on Star Wars Day! It’s one of our favorite holidays around my household.

Perhaps it’s time for us to come up with a new fun Star Wars creation, with either the Mandalorian or Grogu in mind.

May the force be with you! (Or, May the 4th be with you!)

Ingredients for Star Wars BB-8 Droid Quesadillas

  • Flour Tortillas: Soft taco sized tortillas are the perfect size for the BB 8 droid quesadillas.
  • Cream cheese: Mixed with the black food coloring, this’ll create the perfect silver cream cheese mixture to show the metal parts located on the droid’s round quesadilla body and head.
  • Cheddar cheese slices: The cheddar cheese sandwich slices will mimic the orange parts of the bb 8 droid. It’ll form the center mechanism of Star Wars bb 8.
  • Shredded Mexican cheese blend: The perfect shredded cheese blend for all quesadillas. This will hold the droid’s round quesadilla body and head pieces together.
  • Black food coloring: When mixed with the cream cheese, this will create a silver grey cream cheese color that is similar to the grey accents found on Star Wars BB 8. You’ll also use the black food coloring to create black cream cheese to add the final camera on BB 8.
  • Equipment Needed:
    • Ziplock bag: A sandwich sized ziplock bag is perfect for holding the cream cheese mixture.
    • White wine glass: You’ll use the white wine glass to cut a circle in the center of the cheddar cheese slice. This will form a solid circle of cheese. You may also use any other circular tool to cut a solid circle.
    • Paring knife: You’ll need the paring knife to help cut the solid circle of cheese into different parts to mimic the shapes found in the bb 8 droid quesadillas.

BB-8 Quesadilla Prep Work – Silver Cream Cheese

BB-8 needs all the accent colors to really give it an authentic look. You’ll prep the colored cream cheese mixture to be ready for the decorating steps done during the assembly.

  1. In a small bowl, mix softened cream cheese with a bit of black food coloring until it turns a silver/gray color.
  2. Turn a sandwich bag inside out over your hand, and scoop the silver cream cheese. Reserve a small amount of silver grey cream cheese in the bowl for later.
  3. Turn the sandwich bag right side out and push the cream cheese into one corner of the bag.
  4. Get the bag ready to pipe the cream cheese by using a sharp knife or scissors, cut the corner of the bag off so you have a small hole to pipe the cream cheese. You can always make it bigger–start small!
  5. Add more black food coloring to the silver grey cream cheese that you set aside–enough that you get a jet black color.

For BB-8’s Body

  1. Place one cheddar cheese slice on a cutting board. Invert your wine glass and use it to cut a circle in the center of the slice. You’ll need to use a little pressure pushing the wine glass into the cheese against the cutting board.
  2. Take the solid circle of cheese and freehand cut another small circle in the center, using a paring knife. It should look like a cheese donut when you’re finished.
  3. Cut four concentric sections from the inside hole, leaving four small interior spokes. This will form the center mechanism of BB-8’s body.
  4. Take one cheddar cheese slice and using the same technique as in the first step, invert your wine glass to cut another circle in the center of the slice.
  5. Take the second solid circle of cheese and cut it into four equal quarter rounds–it should look like you have four equal pie pieces of cheese. Each piece should be about the same thickness and size.
  6. Cut the rounded edge of the cheddar cheese sliced pieces to create four equal quarter rounds, about the same thickness of your center mechanism piece. These will form the four side pieces of BB-8’s body.

For BB-8’s Droid Head

  1. Take the rest of one the other cheese slice and cut a section from for droid’s head stripe (look at the picture above for help). This should be about a quarter inch in width.
  2. From the extra cheddar cheese sliced pieces, cut several squares and rectangles of different sizes to attach as decorative pieces along the bottom grey head stripe.
  3. Cut the third flour tortilla in half. This flour tortilla will form the droid’s tortilla head.
  4. Using your knife, cut the corners of the tortilla to round them up a bit.
  5. Cut one of the scrap pieces of tortilla to form the small antenna for the top of BB-8’s head.

BB-8 Assembly:

  1. Place first flour tortilla on a microwave safe plate, and sprinkle with 2/3 of the shredded cheese blend.
  2. Place the second flour tortilla onto the one you just added the cheese to. By adding the second flour tortilla on top of the first, you just created BB 8’s body.
  3. Microwave the quesadilla for one minute.
  4. Cut the third flour tortilla in half. Using your knife, cut the corners of the tortilla to round them up a bit.
  5. Repeat this process with BB-8’s tortilla head. You should now have two cheese quesadillas.
  6. Cut one of the scrap pieces of tortilla to form the small antenna for the top of BB-8’s head.
  7. Decorate BB-8 with all of the cheese pieces you cut out and pipe silver grey cream cheese in areas shown in the picture. Go slowly when piping the grey head stripe. Try to get the line as straight as possible. Please use the photo for reference on where to place the pieces to your cheese quesadillas.
  8. Using the tip of your knife, place a small circle of black cream cheese on BB-8’s head and an even smaller circle below and to the right of it as shown.
  9. Pipe a silver rim around the smaller dot of black cream cheese.
  10. Place BB-8’s head on his body and top with the tortilla antenna piece.
